Fishponds Road end roof.

Post by DarrenW »

With the news the Fishponds roof has blown off sadly I shared the facebook post and this photo came up.

I cant recall us playing Woking in my time (93 onwards) but when was the roof put on the stand?

According to the website, we last played Woking in 1990 in a league game.

I remember the game.....it was about my third home game ever. Last game of the season. Woking were up for promotion and we were just short of it. Think we lost 3-1. Quite a sizeable crowd as I remember.

Must have had successive promotions as they have always been a Conference/National League side from as far back as I can remember thinking we'd have been Isthmian div 1 then?

Whilst we are on about the roof of the Fish Ponds Road end of the ground.
If the roof is to be repaired would it be possible to treat the terrace either side of the roof area so it becomes less dangerous in wet or frosty conditions?
I speak from experience as at the Peterborough Sports game had the misfortune of slipping from the terrace and suffered severe bruising to my thigh.

Thanks Geoff. Has the standing area taken any structural damage? Hard to tell from the photo's.

Simply put could it be used without the roof?

It's the uncovered wooden terracing that is the major danger Darren, as MJ Canary has just mentioned. Trust you are okay MJ Canary! This will be addressed as a ground-wide issue.

I thought that the uncovered terracing was made of old railway sleepers - however, the wood looks too thin to be that. Perhaps it is time to negotiate with the Cow Commoners regards removing all the wooden terracing and replacing it with concrete steps.

Far too expensive to put up concrete terracing, it’s all in hand so watch this space .
I can’t remember when the roof was erected and I’ve been head groundsman for 30 years and a supporter before that!
Perhaps Pete Chapman may know?
I remember there was a cover behind the other goal that got blown off before my time so they may have been put up at the same time!
