An early program suggested that the timber came from a Spanish galleon wrecked off the Cornish coast at the time of the Armada, and brought to Hitchin on horse drawn carts by members of Drake's crew with local connections. Not railway sleepers. The roof wasn't there in the early sixties when Dennis Randall et al was delighting us, though there was similar covering on either side of the main stand, which also blew off in a gale. Be nice if this too could be restored.
