The Day A Wren Turned Into A Canary

Post by Greenfinch »

Drawn away to Hereford Utd in the 1st round of the FA Cup,and being part of the Management team and Hospitality at Top Field (which I still miss) I was honoured and delighted to join the rest of the officials and players on the team coach.I heard that Hereford were nicknamed The Bulls, and A Canary being somewhat smaller I decided to put a stuffed one on my shoulder, but could only find a stuffed Wren, so I had it sprayed Yellow in my Bodyshop.I then attached it to wire, which ran through to the bottom of my Jacket, and by discreetly putting my hand through I could make it spin round.
The Coach pulled out of TopField, and nobody really saw my Canary, until we stopped for lunch, and Neil just mentioned in conversation (in the nicest possible way) that being a League Club it could break Boardroom rules. I didn't have the heart to remove it,and as I was sitting next to Ken Wayling I asked his advice, he said 'Come in with us, and if they refuse entry, then you will have to remove it'
We travelled through Hereford City where all the traffic lights had been set Green and escorted by Police Motorcycles, and eventually arrived at the rear of The Stadium to enter The Board Room, I was about 8th in the queue, and my heart was racing, when a voice boomed out from the doorway and said'That man with the Canary on his shoulder come on down' It was Peter(cannot remember his Surname) the Chairman of Hereford Utd and with a quick step and Canary spin, we had arrived ......... to be continued.

Peter Hills, Chairman of Hereford. Nice fellow. I wonder what happened to him, he was not liked by the fans for some reason.
I remember that Canary, Peter....a great day, and afterwards I had to go to Shrewsbury from Hereford by train to attend a wedding reception of a friend.
I didn't get back from Hereford until Sunday late afternoon.
