Express Pen Sketches
H.S.Millard
It is rather remarkable that nearly all the Hitchin players have unusual nicknames when on the field. There are 'Tiddler' Cannon, 'Singey' Duller, 'Rhubarb' Pateman, and 'Teener' Crawley. But one, the derivation of which is not known locally is 'Pickles'.
Harry Sidney Millard, to give 'Pickles' his correct name, is a native of Stotfold, in which village he first played for Stotfold Rovers in the Biggleswade and District League (now the South Midlands League). Last season he joined Hitchin.
Until recently 'Pickles' played at inside-right, now he occupies the centre-forward position. He is one of the club's most prolific scorers, and in one match last season he scored seven goals. When he gets a clear field Millard 'runs like a hare'.
