Express Pen Sketches

Cecil Edward Burges
Readers of these sketches will have noticed that a number of local footballers received their first or early training with Hitchin Blue Cross, which until its extinction a few seasons ago had a fine reputation. Yet another Blue Cross 'pupil' is Cecil Edward Burges - otherwise 'Budget' [Budger?]
Burges, who is a native of Hitchin, was captain of the Hitchin British School team for two seasons, in one of which the school won the Hitchin and District Schools' League. Then for a number of seasons he played at inside-left for the Blue Cross, being the Club's top scorer in one season. The Club was at that time at the height of its career, and the team won many competitions.
St Albans City, who have had several recruits from Hitchin, then secured Burges for two seasons, he helping them to win the Herts Senior Cup. After leaving St Albans, Burges followed Duller and Cannon to Cambridge, but returned to his home town when the Town Club was resuscitated. For his first season with Hitchin he played regularly in the first eleven, helping the Club to win the Herts Charity Shield and become runners-up in the Spartan League.
During the past two seasons Burges has frequently turned out for either the first or second eleven.
As a cricketer Burges is an all-rounder and has played for the Blue Cross and the Town Clubs.
He is married and lives at Hitchin, where he is an auctioneer's clerk.
