Leonard Stokes Hart: Chairman

Post by anthony.brown »

By the time we celebrate the centenary of the Hitchin Town Football Club in 2028, perhaps Mr Leonard Stokes Hart, the Club's first chairman could be considered for adding to our Hall of Fame?
Born 7th October 1881 in Tillingham, Essex, Len arrived in Hitchin as an elementary school teacher, marrying Hitchin girl Harriet Susannah Raban in April 1909.
He taught at the Hitchin British School and his footballing activities included refereeing and work as secretary of the North Herts FA.
The 1901 census shows him living at 43, Dacre Road, Hitchin (School teacher).
In 1911 he is shown as an elementary school teacher living at 6, Bedford Road, Hitchin.
The 1939 census shows him at 63, Bedford Road, Hitchin (Assistant Schoolmaster).
Tragically his son Marshall Raban Hart died from cholera in Thailand after being captured in Singapore in 1942.
He died aged 94 on 24th November 1975 at the Rosehill Hospital.
Does anyone have any memories of Len?
