3rd April 1970 Isthmian League

Oxford City 0 Hitchin 4 (Roy Cutler 3, Brian Baigent)

Pen picture of Tony Harley by Cyril Buck, Team Manager
Tony Harley (inside forward). Tony is the other half of the famous Hitchin Twins, Timothy and Tony; sons of Committee Man, Bill Harley, who was a regular Hitchin Rangers player. Tony gained great distinction at all sports at Bessemer School, Hitchin, and has spent all last season on the staff at Chelsea Football Club, helping Hitchin Town first of all in mid-week games with the Mercia League Team, and playing several first Team games at the end of the season.
From HTFC Club Annual and Museum Supplement 1966/7

I have used Tony's pen picture because none of the other players in the above game were in the 66/67 Annual.

3rd April 1869 Football Club Hare and Hounds. See Francis Shillitoe: Local Hero thread for details.

4th April 1969 Isthmian League

Hitchin Town 2 (Ken Fulkes, John Ashworth) Bromley 0

Pen Picture of Ken Fulkes by Cyril Buck (New signings 1966/67)
Winger or inside forward. Was a regular member of Tooting and Mitcham F. C., until his work took him to Stevenage new town, and he joined the local Southern League club last season. He played fairly regularly for them and scored a good number of goals. He is expected to make the 1st XI team.

Ken's record at Hitchin (from Fishponder stats) 125 apps 34 goals

A first (and last) match for Neil Christian at No 3

I was on a Hitchin Boys' School trip to north Wales and saw the result of this match come through on the BBC vidiprinter at the hotel where we stayed!

Talking to someone today she told me that some pupils from HBS were due to go on a trip to Peru which has been cancelled due to Covid-19 - school trips sure have changed since my day!!

7th April 1973
Isthmian League
Walton & Hersham 1 (Roger Connell) Hitchin Town 1 (Tony Martin)

League Division 2
Luton Town 1 (Jim Ryan) Fulham 0
This is the match I went to on this day in '73. Straight afterwards, I was off to Hitchin College to see the Edgar Broughton Band. Out Demons Out!

8th April 1935 Spartan League
Hitchin Town 1 (Sid King) Callender Athletic 0

8th April 1970 League Division 3
Fulham 0 Luton 1 (Malcolm Macdonald)
The return ticket to London on the railway was eight shillings (40p). We were chased by irate Cottagers all the way back to Kings Cross. Objects tossed our way included fire extinguishers, but luckily we arrived back home unscathed.

I was there. But I was not one of those that chased you back to Kings Cross! :nono: From what I remember after Macdonald's goal, Luton kicked the ball in the Thames at every opportunity. We kissed goodbye to promotion that night!

9th April 1930 Spartan League
Hitchin Town 5 (Frank Webster, Joe Muncey, Wilf Jordan, Albert Tasker 2)
Eastbourne Comrades 0

9th April 2011 Southern League
Hitchin Town 5 (John Frendo 2, Zak Burke 2, Richard Howell, pen)
Bedfont Town 1 (Lee Scott)

Just a couple of selections from Fishponder's amazing stats. I wasn't around for the 1930 match (20 years before I was born!) but it's great to be reminded of the more recent matches, and the magnificent playing career John Frendo had at Top Field.
