24th February 1866. Against a scratch Wanderers team brought to the Dog Kennel Farm by Cecil Reid and R.D.Elphinstone, Hitchin won their first ever game 2-1. Goals from John Pardoe and Conder for Hitchin, and Robert Elphinstone for his side.
Before the Hitchin Club was formed in 1865, the local press did show a Hitchin match in 1855; but this was the Hitchin Cricket Club playing their winter game of football.
