Arlesey Origins

Post by anthony.brown »

A meeting was held at the Brick Ground Hotel for the purpose of forming a football club, when it was agreed that Mr R.W.Wright take the secretaryship, and Mr W.Thompson that of treasurer. As it is late in the season, any secretary having engagements open are asked to communicate with Mr R.W.Wright.

ARLESEY v BALDOCK
These teams met on the ground of the latter on Saturday last, when after a very one-sided game Arlesey won by six goals to nil. This result must be very gratifying to the energetic Captain, Mr Wright, who is taking great pains and trouble to establish a team at Arlesey. He also scored two of the six goals obtained. The feature of the match was the brilliant play of Williams, the Hitchin forward. Though a little fagged in the first half after running from Hitchin to Baldock, he afterwards played with great vigour and dash, and soon scored 3 goals. For the home team, Willsher at back, played well, and the forwards were occasionally good, but could not pass the Arlesey defence, of whom Davis was again conspicuous.

ARLESEY v BEDFORD SWIFTS
The Bedford eleven journeyed to Arlesey to play the village club, on Saturday last, 12th March 1892.
Bedford winning the toss, Arlesey started the ball against the wind and the sun in their eyes. The Bedford team were the first to press, and Finch scored for them ten minutes from the start. Arlesey next scored from a scrimmage, Bowskill doing the needful. Shortly after change of ends, A.Williams scored for Arlesey and later on H.Williams got the leather between the posts. Nothing further was done, and time was called with the score Arlesey three goals and Bedford one.
Shortly after the start, Humphreys, the right wing outsider, received a severe kick on the kneecap, and was of little use the remainder of the game.
During the match the Arlesey Village Brass Band gave a selection of music, and the game was witnessed by a large crowd of spectators.
The teams were as follows:
Arlesey: Page, goal; Davies and Childes, backs; Axom, Devereux, and Fossey, half-backs; A.Williams and Tasker, right wing; Wright, centre; Bowskill and H.Williams, left wing.
Bedford: Thorpe, goal; Giddings and Cooke, backs; Manyweathers, Eaton, and Gray, half-backs; Sergt.J.Smith and Bennett, left wing; Lenton, centre, Humphreys and Finch, right wing.
Linesmen; Messrs Bradey, Arlesey, and Carter, Bedford.
Referee; Mr H.Eaton.
