Hitchin Town mention

Possibly old news to some of you on here but I got a new book in the post today about The Fall and was surprised to see Hitchin Town mentioned in this piece about non league football by writer / musician Bob Stanley

I knew about this but the info is a bit wrong...it was club president Syd Stapleton that talked about the illegal payments and Laurie Scott was not dismissed because of it. Scott went because of decline on the pitch.

There was a happy ending to this, when Syd's sine die suspension was lifted after just three years, and Laurie continued until 1968. A Clacton FC player I knew explained to me the concept of 'boot money'; in the fifties he would find a fiver placed in his boot after a game. Widespread shamateurism.....
