Charles Horton Baylis: Local Hero?

Post by anthony.brown »

Charles Horton Baylis (1868-1941) was the Hitchin F.C. secretary who claimed to have brought professionalism to the Club.
Born in Alcester, Warwickshire, he first moved to Hemel Hempstead to work in the office of the Clerk to the Justices. While at Hemel he played (and was captain) for Apsley F.C. and also played for the West Herts Association combined team. Moving to Hitchin in about 1897, he became a local relieving officer, an administrator of the Poor Laws reporting to the Local Board.
In 1901, Charles was living in York Road, Hitchin. The professional experiment hit problems in 1905, but struggled on until 1908. He remained on the committee until the collapse of the (amateur) Spartan League Club in 1911.
In 1911 he was living with his wife and five children at 31, Bancroft, Hitchin (still a local relieving officer).
To be continued.......................................
