Kempston Rovers v Eccleshill United

Post by anthony.brown »

A warm welcome at the turnstile on a hot day for football. Kempston's volunteers on a par with Hitchin's age-wise, most in their sixties? This Inter-step play off was won by Kempston on pens after extra time (4 pens to 3). Our old player Trey worked hard up front without hitting the net. Kempston captain Charlie Hayford was cool in all he did, and scored from a penalty near the end of the first half; which he hit straight at the goalkeeper but belted the ball in when it rebounded to him. Kempston conceded two soft goals at the start of the second half, but equalised to send the tie into extra time.
How bizarre is an 'Inter Step Play Off'? There won't be many more of these as the FA come close to achieving the 'perfect pyramid' within the next couple of years.

Went to the Lancing v Newhaven Inter Step Play Off and again the home side came out on top despite being a goal down. This was the closest to a local derby and attracted 700 people!
I have heard that the "powers that be" are keen to repeat these play-offs. In the past I can only recall them being used in the football league when play offs first started, and were quickly changed to remove the risk of relegation by play-off.
Interesting to see two of Hitchin's recent rivals disappear through the trap door as both Histon and Cinderford drop into Step 5.
