JOHN MOTSON was not only a commentator, his enthusiasm for football and its every detail was unmatched. I hired him as a speaker at Hitchin Town for a sportsman’s evening in 1992 and he subscribed to a small fanzine-type booklet I produced about Chelsea in the 1980s. We were in touch for some years, he was living in St. Albans at the time, and I recall his first visit to Chelsea being on December 27 1957, a 7-4 win against Portsmouth with Jimmy Greaves scoring four times. He gave me one of his commentatory boards, an England versus Poland game at Wembley. I still have it tucked away somewhere. He will, of course be remembered for the famous Hereford v Newcastle United game in 1972, but I will also recall his huge knowledge of the game. RIP Motty.

An inspiration, one of the very best to ever do it. RIP.

The best.

Sadly cant see any of the modern generation of commentators being able to have anything like the imput he had. He said it like a fan more often than not.
