Hitchin War Memorial

Post by anthony.brown »

On Armistice Day, remembering Acting Company Sergeant Major Frank Cannon.
Son of Mr & Mrs John Cannon, fruiterers, of High Street, Frank was extremely well-known locally.
He was attached to the 11th Essex Regiment, and had been acting company sergeant major for three weeks before his death on 15th February 1916, in Flanders, Belgium. He was wounded by shrapnel and expired on the way to the dressing station.
Sergeant Cannon was a prominent footballer in Hitchin's South Eastern League days. Later he played as a professional for West Ham and Queen's Park, and he also figured for the Halifax team.
As a right wing-forward, outside right, he carried all before him.
He leaves a widow and two children.
RIP

Biggleswade Chronicle Friday 25th February 1916.
