Fascinating stuff. Does this mean that Hitchin has a lifetime winning record against Fulham?

The Hitchin Football Club has been successful in obtaining admission to what was known last season as the London League, the scope of which has now been considerably widened and which, it is expected, will in future be known as the Home Counties League, and will embrace, among others, the undermentioned clubs:
Tottenham Hotspur Reserves, Millwall Reserves, Queeen's Park Rangers Reserves, West Ham, Grays United, Chesham Town, Chesham Generals, St Albans, and Luton Reserves.

THE SOUTH EASTERN LEAGUE
The following extract from Saturday's 'Football Star' may be of interest:-
Of new leagues which have been established since the close of last season, perhaps one of the most important is the South Eastern, which seems to have caused more than ordinary trouble at Chancery Lane.
Since the Southern League was established the FA have devoted considerable attention to the oversight of various leagues, and the circular issued last season proved that the parent body have realised that leagues have become serious rivals of the cup competitions of the local associations.
League people don't require to be told that nowadays clubs which mean to be anything dare not depend solely on cup ties and friendlies. Moreover, existing organisations do not supply all the needs which certain clubs feel requisite for their welfare, hence the reason for establishing new bodies. The South Eastern League comes under this head.
It is comprised of two distinct classes of clubs:-

1. London clubs: Millwall, Queens Park Rangers, Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham United, and Clapton Orient.

2. County clubs: Chesham Generals, Chesham Town, Grays United, Hitchin, Luton, and St Albans.

The first four London clubs are the Reserves of the strong sides which compete in the S.L and the W.L. They are debarred from the local cup ties, being professionals. London senior amateur clubs don't relish being defeated by Reserves, as undoubtedly most of them would be, and therefore decline to meet them; the S. L. don't admit the Reserves of their Division I to membership in Division II; the London League Division I supplies only half a season's programme, and so a new body was necessary as far as they were concerned.
The county contingent find fairly strong opponents remarkably scarce in their respective districts. Perhaps a bigger drawback is the great difficulties they encounter in getting across country in such counties as Berks, Bucks, Herts, and Beds. Two or three changes of train are often necessary, occasionally to other companies' lines, and the delays at the various junctions are irritating, of long duration, and, in the end, expensive, especially to amateur teams, who can seldom afford to give the whole of Saturday. They say they find it a saving in every way to come up to London, and they are desirous of meeting in a serious competition the strong Reserve teams of the first class professional clubs.

After some trouble about the officials of the new body, the F. A. sanctioned the South Eastern League. A first list of fifty referees has been drawn up, and all subsequent applicants must be recommended by two clubs in the league.

Anthony, a massive thank you for your endeavours here. You've provided loads of statistical information that we never had, which I can add to the archives. Appreciate anything you can find. Great stuff!

Just seconding Chris' comments here Anthony. A wonderful collection of results.

It would be great to expand upon the Hitchin FC section in the history on the Club website, so if you happen to have a spreadsheet of all Hitchin FC fixtures/results, that would be great to include. Alternatively Chris, you may have this, expanded following Anthony's research above.

Errors!
I have amended the results of two Wanderers friendlies to read:

20th Feb 1868 Hitchin 0 v Wanderers 2 (C. W. Alcock, H. Emanuel)
26th Nov 1868 Hitchin 1 (W.Hill) Wanderers 1 (C. W. Alcock)

and added

1st Dec 1866 Hitchin 0 Wanderers 5 (Scorers unknown)

Some stats from Hitchin's South Eastern League record:

1901/2 P20 W5 L14 D1 F35 A59 Points 11 Position 9th
1902/3 P22 W3 L14 D5 F26 A63 Points 11 Position Last
1903/4 P24 W10 L9 D5 F39 A57 Points 25 Position 6th

I have not prepared a spread sheet, as research is at an early stage, with lots of info still to be found. Should have enough for a chronological list within a few ............................ months??????
I have confirmed the Wanderers friendly games by reading Rob Cavallini's super publication 'The Wanderers F. C: Five times FA Cup winners' (available everywhere). A report in a Hastings newspaper that a Hitchin v Wanderers game occurred in 1871/2 appears to be false.

Hi Stew, that's exactly where it's at. I have an Excel spreadsheet of all known results from 1865-1911 which I'd like to get onto the website as soon as is convenient. Got this from Neil Jensen. Anthony's findings have been immensely valuable in helping to expand what I already had from Neil combined with what I had collected myself, but there are still a lot of gaps to fill!

Happy to share this no problems, would save Anthony having to reinvent the wheel!
