Oldest Canaries Programme in Circulation?

Post by CanaryHatter » Mon Feb 11, 2019 7:29 pm

Evening all,

Just out of interest, what's the oldest Hitchin matchday programme / match card which people have in their collection? Tales of the Town has a picture of "that first programme" where Waltham Comrades were beaten at Top Field in 1928 (page 23). Would be amazing if someone had a copy of this.

Also - surely nobody owns any publication from the original Hitchin FC do they?

The earliest issue with Hitchin as the home side currently on eBay is from 1953/54:

The earliest issue involving Hitchin currently on eBay is a reserves fixture away to Letchworth Town from 1948:

The earliest Hitchin Town programme I have in my collection is from a friendly match against GE Romford on 21st December 1929, which Hitchin Town won 4-1.

The oldest scan I have of a Hitchin Town programme I have is from a Reserves game in the Spartan League Division 2, against the Ministry

The rarest Hitchin Town programme I have is from 31st July 2010 - a pre-season friendly at Wroxham. Only six were printed for Board Room officials. None were sold at the game. I managed to acquire one....I have no idea where the other five went. Don't have a scan of this one.

Whilst I don't have any original programmes or team sheets from the original Hitchin FC, I do have a reproduction copy of a Chelsea v Hitchin programme from the South Eastern League Match played on September 14th 1907, where Hitchin became the first-ever team to win at Stamford Bridge. This is the back page of the 4 page programme:

The most likely persons to have a copy of the Waltham Comrades programme from 1928-29, if any, would be Roy or Tony Gill. Unless anybody knows anyone else?
