10th January 1903
Luton Reserves 1 Hitchin 1
The return match between these teams took place on the Town ground on Saturday, 10th January 1903. Both clubs were well represented, as follows:
Luton: Goodge; Sapwell and Street; Heley, Everitt, and Garrett; Parsons, Eling, Gall, Plummer and Woods.
Hitchin: Cooper; Allen and Worboys; Hales, Auburn, and Stimpson; Anderson, Taylor, Barker, Cannon and Holt.

The visitors won the toss, but Luton first attacked. The Hitchin goal had a narrow escape from a free-kick. Eling missed badly a fine centre from Woods. Pretty play by the right wing resulted in a corner, which Parsons placed finely, and Cooper, in saving, put through his own goal. Cooper was severely tested by Gall and Woods, but Eling shot high over the bar, and thus relieved the pressure. Sapwell and Everitt each cleared efforts by the visitors to get through. However, after Cannon had shot behind, Barker scored an off-side point. Hitchin forced an abortive corner, but at half-time were a goal behind.
On resuming, Luton forced a corner, but Plummer shot behind. Barker shot into Goodge's hands, and two corners to Hitchin were fruitless. Barker made a good effort, while some good play by the Luton forwards was nullified by Street sending wide. After two free-kicks against Luton, the Hitchin men equalised through Cannon, who gave Goodge no chance. Gall shot over a smart centre from Plummer, and Cooper saved finely from Parsons, while Plummer missed with only the goalkeeper to beat. Play was tame and uninteresting. The reserves gave a very disappointing display; apparently they could do nothing right. The game ended: Luton Reserves 1 goal, Hitchin 1 goal.
Notes
The match was by no means exciting, and the only interest centred in the last 20 minutes. The Reserves were very weak, and it is needless to criticize any of them, as few of the players did themselves credit. Mention might be made of Sapwell, Eling and Parsons, who all tried hard, while the former defended smartly.
As to Hitchin, they were much quicker on the ball than Luton, and it was only weakness in front of goal that prevented them from winning. Cooper was fair in goal. Both backs kicked and cleared their lines effectively. The halves, too, did well, but the forwards were only fair. Barker was a failure in the centre. The right wing made some dangerous incursions into the home territory, but they failed at the critical moment. The referee was fair to both sides and gave general satisfaction.

How nice to have given Kings Langley a thumping considering our poor record against them this season!

That was my Dad's 33rd birthday - he's 93 today!

20th January 1906 South Eastern League

Woolwich Arsenal Reserves 2 (Minter, Chaplin) Hitchin 0

Although the Arsenal reserves were not sure in their shooting, they quite easily beat Hitchin on Saturday by two goals to nil. A large crowd saw the junior Reds start in promising style, and Minter, the military centre, was often in close communication with the Hitchin custodian, but only once in the opening half could the home team penetrate the solid Hitchin defence, then Minter shot into the net.
The best goal of the match came from Chaplin in the second half, the clever half-back gathering the ball in fine style, and driving it into the net.
The finish was rather exciting, as during the closing minutes the visitors pressed very strongly, and Batup had to clear several difficult shots. Apart from the smart goal-keeping of both custodians, the great feature of an interesting display was the earnest and clever forward work Minter accomplished for the Reds.
