Kempston Parts?

Post by anthony.brown »

When Luton Town's new main stand opened in 1922 an urban myth that the stand had been acquired second hand from Kempton Park race course quickly became accepted as truth.
A contemporary news report stated that '...as fine a stand is hard to find anywhere in the League'. This makes it hard to believe the stand was second hand.
The stand was erected by local contractor Ernest Pryer of Maple Road, Luton, adjacent to the ground. I believe the timber would also have been sourced locally, from Henry Brown's timber yard, which was well established between the football ground and Dallow Lane, occupying part of Luton Town's previous ground. The urban myth possibly arose because many of the parts needed to complete the stand so quickly had originally been intended for a planned greyhound stadium at Kempston, Bedford. Kempston's Box End dog track was not opened until 1932, and closed about 1934.
So 'Kempston parts' rather than 'Kempton Park'?
