1928/29 Minute Book

Post by anthony.brown »

Thank you to Roy for the fascinating extracts from the old minute book.
In Part 11 it was reported that a friendly match against Wood Green had ended 1-1 on Easter Monday 1st April 1929. The actual score was 1-3, Hawkins (2) and Rist scoring for Wood Green, and Saggers (as stated in the minutes) scoring for Hitchin. Match report from 'Brigadier':

HITCHIN GO DOWN IN FRIENDLY
HITCHIN TOWN 1 WOOD GREEN 3

Hitchin: E.Bacon; B.Saggers (captain), R.G.Trussell; T.Cheshire, P.Crawley, G.Pateman; J.E.Davey; J.C.F.Thompson, E.Bullard, A.Tasker, W.Barker.
Wood Green: A.L.Upson; W.Humphreys, J.Gavid; C.L.Scotter, J.Wells, J.F.Broadway; R,Court, S.Mitchell, R.Hawkins, W.Weddle, J.T.Rist.
Referee: Mr J.Sharp.

Yesterday HITCHIN TOWN had to admit defeat by a better team when they met WOOD GREEN (the Spartan League First Division team) in a friendly match on the Bedford Road ground. The visitors ran the 'Canaries' off their feet in the first half, while they had the advantage of the wind. Trussell was injured early on, and had to leave the field. J.West came on in his place, and the home team had to be considerably re-arranged. The visitors deserved their lead of three goals clear at the interval. Their scorers were HAWKINS (2) and RIST.
The homesters rallied well in the second half but had considerable bad luck, the visitors' goal appearing to have a charmed life. SAGGERS, however, netted from a penalty kick.
