Manager’s Notes

Postponed Game vs Welwyn Garden City

As this game was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch the players were able to have a Saturday off.

London Lions in Midweek

Wednesday we travelled to London Lions for our Herts Senior Cup Semi – Final. Unfortunately this game was postponed late on due to the weather.

I know everyone will be frustrated with the postponement, especially how late it was but honestly no one is to blame and unfortunately no one can control the weather.

The day had been sunny leading up to the game and there was no need for a pitch inspection but late evening the rain started to come down.

The initial assessment was conducted by the London Lions volunteers while waiting for the match officials to arrive and there was one small area of concern.

When the match officials arrived a pitch inspection was carried out and the ball could bounce and roll comfortably on all areas of the pitch. The referee had his doubts about the weather forecast but as both teams and managers were happy to play as the pitch was more than playable the referee made the decision to play.

Team talks were held and warm ups started and the areas of the pitch the teams were warming up on were fine but a small area in the far corner had deteriorated and the ball was struggling to bounce and roll and this would have an effect on player safety.

The tough decision was made to postpone the game.

I can only apologise to everyone who travelled to the game and wasted a Wednesday evening but we wanted to get the game played and everyone gave it their best efforts to get the game on as everyone was already at the ground but the weather did not work with us.

Despite the change of plans to our week we were still able to train Monday and Thursday in preparation for Ware FC on Saturday.

The Meeting with Ware on Saturday

Saturday we host Ware FC as we look to bounce back and react from the disappointment of our last game against Biggleswade.

Ware currently find themselves just out of the playoff places but will be confident on finishing in them come the end of the season. In Ware’s last away game they beat Hertford Town 4-1.

Ware score a lot of goals and have a very athletic front line that are always a threat throughout the game.

This will be another tough test for our group and we will certainly need to be much improved from our last game to get anything out of this.

I look forward to seeing you all on Saturday.

Player News
  • Fernando Bell-Toxtle is being rested for this weekend.
  • Charlie Briggs will miss this Saturday after sustaining an injury which required stitches.

Good Luck Hannah!

Everyone at Hitchin Town FC wishes Mark Burke’s daughter Hannah the very best of luck she gets married to her fiancé Richard today.

Hannah has been a lifelong Hitchin supporter, coming to matches with Mark when he was a player, then running the sweet shop with her brother Kieran before becoming a season ticket holder when Mark was the Manager.

Matchday Mascot Experience

Denis Mason and his son James have this season been looking after the mascots at Top Field. It is wonderful when we get positive feedback for our volunteers and James has really been a hit with the mascots and parents.  Both Denis and James have been a feather in our cap this season and we are hugely grateful to them.

We received this email from Gemma from our under 8 Ospreys after their day as mascots:

Thanks so much Denis, and thanks for helping us organise the boy’s special day. They absolutely loved it.

Some of the player’s parents and I were also saying how lovely James was also – what a polite, engaging and charming young man – you must be very proud of him.

Thanks again- have a good week.’

Gemma U8 Osprey Mascots

Below Denis gives more details of the mascot’s match day experience:

This season we have welcomed 160 mascots from 15 groups so far, with teams from Hitchin Town Youth FC, Hitchin Belles, Wymondley, FC Comets, and Letchworth Eagles, as well as school and cubs groups.

They have all enjoyed a tour of the dressing rooms and behind the scenes, playing on the Top Field pitch, and walking out with the players before the game as well as featuring in the matchday programme.

There is an email address mascots@hitchintownfc.club and a webpage with further details: https://hitchintownfc.club/matchday-mascots/

We’re fully booked for this season but please do get in contact to request when next season’s fixtures become available.

Denis and James are two more examples of how lucky we are to have such excellent volunteers and how the club is in a much better place because of their commitment.
