I look forward to welcoming everybody to Top Field on Saturday and I hope you enjoy an entertaining match against a very strong Luton Town squad. I would like to thank Gary Sweet, Paul Watson, Nathan Jones and Mick Harford for helping to arrange this fixture. Traditionally this has been a well supported fixture and this year is no exception with tickets sold out really quickly.

I grew up as a Luton fan and I am delighted they have returned to Hitchin and renewed the close relationship between the two clubs. I would also like to thank Tony Brennan (ATB Electrical Services), former Spurs and Hitchin player Robbie Simpson (Simpson Mortgage Services) and Mick Donohue (CME Heating) all of whom have sponsored the Luton game.

On Tuesday I look forward to welcoming Hitchin Town legend Brett Digger Donnelly who will bring his Stotfold team to Top Field. I wish him every success in his new role as manager.

Pre-season has changed considerably from when I was playing. In my day players would have a six week summer break enjoying themselves and not particularly keeping themselves fit. We would then return for a gruelling pre-season fitness programme in readiness for the new season. Nowadays players are far more aware of diets and maintaining fitness throughout the year. This helps managers as we can concentrate more on technical aspects of the game, including shape and set pieces.

Once again I am excited about the new season as we have a young, strong squad that is capable of competing with the top teams while playing attractive football. I hope after today many of you will want to return to Top Field including Luton fans who could watch our Monday night home games.

Finally I would like to pay tribute to all our volunteers who have worked tirelessly to make such a difference to our ground. I have been really impressed by the improvements that have been made.

We are very excited to invite supporters back to Top Field tomorrow for the first of our pre season matches. A huge Hitchin Town welcome to the Luton Town Supporters.

Top Field has gone through a massive overhaul in the last 16 months; a HUGE amount of work and effort has been put in by our band of 29 volunteers. These amazing people with an average age of 60 have worked solidly in all weather on Saturdays and evenings to ensure that as much work was completed in time for this season. When you walk through the gates you won’t see the finished product (we are waiting delivery of the new terracing for the Fishponds Road End) but I do hope you appreciate the changes that have taken place. Top Field has never looked so good! That is thanks to our wonderful supporters for their amazing Crowdfunding money which has allowed us to make radical changes including the fencing, roofing and other jobs required to make Top Field safe. Also this would not have been possible without the dedication of those volunteers who wanted to see Top Field back looking its best.

We cannot wax lyrical enough about our volunteers or how inspiring we have found them to work alongside, ranging between ages of 16 to 78 the back breaking work and really wonderful skills we have found within the force has been outstanding at the very least. We will name them all as they all deserve a shout out. Sadly we lost one of our crew along the way, dear Matthew, you are very much missed, you will always be remembered with great fondness.

Thank you to Steve B, Rupert R, Matthew M, Marek M, Allan J, Sam J, Nick S, Andy S, Steve M, Gary P, David T, Paul S, Lee D, Alan J, Steve M, Roger B, Paul M, Mark M, Martin T, Peter M, Geoff T, Kevin L, Bill R, Jan R, Frank K, Kate D, Sascha GB, Chris N & Elaine C.

Thank you all for as much or as little you gave, it really made a difference to our club and ground.

So please, all still take care around the ground as it is unfinished and there will be changes you need to get used to; stands not where they used to be, new concrete where it wasn’t before. There are areas cordoned off for your safety. Please do look and appreciate the stadium, we are all very proud of what we have been able to achieve with teamwork. Please listen to the volunteer marshalls and security officers as they are there to ensure you have an enjoyable matchday experience.

Have a great day on Saturday, enjoy the football and the food.

Pre-season commentaries:
We’re really pleased to announce that HTFC Radio will be commentating on all 12 of Hitchin’s pre-season games this summer, starting with the visit of Luton Town on Saturday! Your commentary team will include me and Marac Alionic, and we will also be joined by Brian Gray for some of the matches as well as local chef and Hatters fan Martin Burke on Saturday. Saturday’s coverage will also include an interview with Luke Brown at 2:30pm! The Canary Club Podcast is also continuing with interviews and Euros excitement, and if you miss any of the commentaries you can listen back as a podcast.

Tune in live on, we can’t wait to be back at Top Field!

On Saturday 26th June we had some of our current academy players represent the club in a pre-season trial match. They did not disappoint and had a big impact on the 2-0 win with goals coming from Stan Georgiou who scored the first and Kye Tearle who scored the second.

Its great to see the opportunities the academy players are getting within the first team squad being allowed to train on a regular basis while also being selected for games.

If you want to be apart of the academy please register your interest here -

There is exciting news regarding the Canary Kitchen, our excellent catering outlet. Please see how things have changed as Paul and Kirsty explain their plans for the coming season in this press release.
