MANAGER’S NOTES WITH MARK BURKE

BIGGLESWADE UNITED

I would like to thank Biggleswade United for hosting us on Saturday. We have a very good relationship with the club and it was good to meet their management and officials. It was a very hot day and the surface was very hard underfoot which made for difficult conditions. We started brightly with a much depleted squad and I was pleased when we took the lead. I thought we defended well in the first half and their keeper made some good saves.

The second half saw Biggleswade take the game to us and they deservedly equalized. I was disappointed that our play became a little ragged but credit to Biggleswade for dealing with the conditions better than us.They had more of the possession but our keeper was not really troubled. On reflection I was disappointed with our lack of a cutting edge but I have to take account of the absence of so many first team players. I wish Christian, Guillem and all at Biggleswade best wishes for the season.

CAMBRIDGE CITY

Tuesday saw the return of five key players who were missing on Saturday, all of whom were in desperate need of game time. Despite an early set back I thought we played well throughout the match. We defended well and deserved our well worked equalizer. We created chances all through the game despite the numerous substitutions.

On the whole this was a very positive night that saw us end our pre-season unbeaten in our last four matches. It was really pleasing to see a number of first team regulars return and they came through the game unscathed.

PHOTO CALL

Last night saw the club come together at our official photo call. This year it was great to see the players ,management and officials joined by our volunteers ,club sponsors and representatives of the junior and ladies sections.

BARWELL

Saturday sees us travel to fellow Canaries Barwell in our first league game. We know this will be a difficult contest because I envisage every game being very close such is the quality of teams in the Central Division. The Barwell manager Ian King is avery good coach and I know he will get the best out of the Barwell players.

We will be looking to build on Tuesday’s performance and I am hopeful I will have a near full strength squad to choose from although George Devine is struggling after getting injured at Biggleswade..

BIGGLESWADE TOWN

Biggleswade Town approached me to see if we would want a friendly on Tuesday as they start their season next Saturday. I thought this would be a good opportunity for us to give players who have missed most of the pre-season vital minutes on the pitch.

FRANK KING UPDATE BY CHRIS NEWBOLD
There have been a number of folks asking what the details for Frank’s funeral will be.

I have spoken with Frank’s sister Janet and his niece Elizabeth. In line with Frank’s express wishes which he and his sister had shared, he is to have a “pure” cremation with no ceremony. His niece is very much wishing though to honour his memory at the Football Club with a wake, and I will be meeting her at a convenient time for us both next week to discuss this and to start arrangements. She understands how well thought of Frank was at the football club and that there will be a number of us wanting to raise a glass to him.

As soon as I know more, I will share details.
